Qualifications to Be a Surrogate
Learn About the Qualifications to Be a Gestational Carrier
Becoming a Gestational Carrier, or Surrogate, is a highly personal journey that requires amazing generosity and remarkable empathy. If you want to become a Surrogate at the Center for Surrogacy & Egg Donation, you need to meet certain health and lifestyle criteria.
We wish it were possible for all women who selflessly want to help a couple fulfill their dream of starting their family — but your safety is our primary concern. Our Surrogacy qualifications ensure this process can be a healthy and successful experience for you.
Our Requirements to Be a Surrogate
Deciding whether you qualify for Surrogacy involves careful consideration of personal, medical and financial factors. Our requirements were developed with ASRM guidelines in mind, together with some of the world's most highly rated reproductive clinics. While the criteria for Surrogacy may seem strict, the intention is to protect the health and safety of our Surrogates and the children they carry.
Let's review the basic requirements that a potential Surrogate needs to meet to start the process.
Health Requirements
Age 21 to 39: You must be between these ages to lower the chances of pregnancy risk.
Good overall health: It's important that you don't have any health conditions that could be worsened by pregnancy.
Healthy prior pregnancy: You must have had at least one previous pregnancy and have raised the child.
No major pregnancy complications: We cannot accept women with a history of serious pregnancy complications such as preterm labor, pre-eclampsia, toxemia, and placental abruption.
Healthy BMI: You must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 35 to reduce the risk of pregnancy complications. Calculate your BMI
Lifestyle Requirements
No tobacco use: You must be a non-smoker without exposure to second-hand tobacco use.
U.S. Citizen: Becoming a Surrogate is a long-term commitment due to the extensive medical and legal process. Because of this, you must either be a United States citizen or have legal permanent residency.
No criminal history: We cannot accept Surrogates who have been convicted of a felony.
Financial and Personal Requirements
Reliable and committed: We ask that our Surrogates demonstrate reliability and are prepared to follow through with all medical procedures and legal requirements throughout the Surrogacy process.
Financially Stable: Whether you work or are a homemaker, Surrogacy cannot be your household's sole source of income.
